Your old war time family recipes!

Do you have any Recipes, handed down through the family, from the era of the Great War of 1914/1918?

We would love to see them and include them in displays at the forthcoming events in Compton Bassett to commemorate the end of the Great War

If you would like to be involved with baking & making for this year's commemerative events.

Thank you!!

To further help with these events, does anyone have any of the following that they would be prepared to loan: WW1 Medals (which would be guarded during events); and information on families resident at the time of the Great War, e.g.Rumming, Lewis, Offer, Weston or Cook.

We are also in need of some notice boards, if anyone has any that they could loan. If you can help with any of these items, please contact Laurie Waite 0n 01249 811076

Britain as a whole is being encouraged to give the 100 year anniversary of the Armistice due recognition, with the Government announcing a series of commemorations to lead up to the centenary that brought the bloody conflict to an end.

Compton Bassett is doing its bit to mark the event with a series of events intended to bring home to villagers, many now with even no memory of those who were once fighting and dying in foriegn fields in a far off land, the tales of suffering and of sacrifice endured by our people of that time. Compton Bassett lost four brave men from the village

To start off a short series of events to commemorate the centenary of the end of WW1 and as an act of remembrance to those who died both in foreign fields and at home, we have poppy seeds to share with villagers to spread in their gardens. If you would like some please contact Fran Creasey on 01249 814539 or email:daveandfran34@gmail.com.

On the 8 September there will be a Village Fete with a difference. Where possible, it will reflect village life during the 14-18 war years. If you had family in Compton Bassett and the surrounding area or have stories, objects or informiation from that time, then we would be very pleased to hear about it; please contact any of those listed below.

An evening of music, poetry and readings will be held at St. Swithin's in late October/early November, charting the war and life both in the battlefields and at home. This is a joint event between the Compton Bassett Singers and CHADS.

10 November sees the planting of four commemorative trees at the War Memorial; timing of this event has yet to be advised.

On 11 November everyone is welcome to participate in the following:

  • 10.00 St Swithin's Remembrance Service
  • 11.00 War Memorial '100th Anniversary of Armistice' service
  • 19.00 Lighting of the beacon at Starve Knoll
  • 19.10 Ringing of our church bells in unison with the bells across the country
  • 19.30 Refreshments.

We would very much appreciate any help you can offer with all of the above, both before and during these events. So, if you can spare some time or have information, family stories, can sing or anything else you feel could inform, enhance or be of help then please contact us.

If you don't live in Compton Bassett you are still very welcome to both help with and attend these events. As the months pass we will keep everyone updated through the pages of The Villages, the Village website and the Village email newsletter.
